This Acquisition and pending Accession of his antique 50-year-old SYMAP Synagraphic Computer Mapping to the National Geography and Map Division. Who, at the time (circa 1975), would imagine the work would be of historic value? Then, Tony was a Planning Analyst and Co-Lecturer of Computer Mapping at Penn State University (also his alma mater for three degrees, AAS, BT, and MRPL). The Synagraphic Computer Mapping routine was developed under Howard T. Fisher of the Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis. It was cutting-edge programming and cartography. Run on the state-of-the-art IBM 360 Mainframe via boxes of thousands of IBM Punch Cards, the line printer Cloropleth Map output was a visual presentation of spatial data. And if run multiple times with evolving data, it could be a chronological presentation of developing situations. A cartographic miracle then, the inducted SYMAPS now are fossils conveying data much like runes on clay tablets or carved pictographs on temple walls. Still, the computer and cartographic revolution had to start somewhere.
