How Not To Drop-Shadow Displays indeed. Drop-shadowing adds dimensionality and realism to a display. It can make an item seem to float above a surface, or just provide added contrast with the background through the creation of the shadow itself. The drop-shadow can be added graphically to a two-dimensional printed piece, or physically created (as here) by lifting an object above a background surface. But creating a darker shadow against an already dark black background might be an exercise in futility. The physical technique in play here … added styrofoam spacers to lift the Energizer battery … is valid. But a reliance on general overall lighting to create a contrast with the black background it fails. A nice try, however.
