A non-slip tread insures shoes stay in place on this inclined display shelf. It seemed to be made of the same material I put on my basement stairs, and allowed a steep angle of attack. One might even argue that as a racing stripe, it helped the display catch the eye all the more. See that the perforated metal shelf allows light to pass through and the holes and steep angle help shed dust and dirt.
