The seeming knot-like nature of this natural wood construct is what makes it appear different. It looks like driftwood and loose branches were compressed into a single mass, then sawed into cubes. Closer inspection showed them not to be as dense as they might appear from a distance. I assume this is both an eco-friendly and economical piece of retail furnishing.
